Overview

We are looking for a Strategic Claims Director to oversee litigation matters related to first party property claims at AmTrust Property Claim. The ideal candidate would be a lawyer with extensive coverage experience in commercial property insurance for first parties and would have at least 10 years of experience in examining complex coverage issues. Candidates who have direct coverage litigation experience will have an advantage. Experience in managing risk transfer and exposure allocation, writing coverage opinions and correspondence, and acting as coverage counsel at third party liability mediations is essential. Our ideal candidate will have excellent legal skills, judgment, analysis, legal research, communication, and coverage.

The purpose of this role is to provide an internal resource for claims professionals, management, and senior leadership to advise them on a variety of coverage issues and foresee possible outcomes of coverage litigation. The role will mainly assist with first party Property claims. Besides providing guidance and writing coverage communications, you will also engage in conversations and litigation activities with external stakeholders and adverse parties. This role also involves preparing and delivering training, supporting claims handling initiatives and other special projects.

Responsibilities
    Provide coverage advice to claims professionals and senior management in connection first party Property claims.
  • Specific responsibilities will include providing coverage opinions and advice and legal support in connection with coverage disputes that arise between insureds and the company.
  • The role will include oversight & responsibility for outside coverage counsel.
  • Track changes to coverage law in all 50 states and advise management and claim professionals regarding the impact of changes.
  • Provide coverage guidance in a dynamic environment in which you will collaborate with internal and external business partners.
  • Work independently in analyzing legal issues and supporting effective coverage dispute resolution strategies.
  • Attend mediations, arbitrations, appraisals, settlement meetings and conferences around the country as business needs warrant.
  • Develop, present, and implement coverage training initiatives to the Property claim organization.
Qualifications
  • Senior level knowledge of legal issues relating to claims, coverage, and litigation management within an insurance organization.
  • Excellent technical and product-specific expertise and knowledge of insurance and claims practices and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent negotiation, consulting, and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with all internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and creatively resolve unique and challenging business problems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and senior level skill in managing uncertainty.
  • Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic business results.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software including Westlaw, XL, Teams, etc.
  • Helps others to excel through collaboration and building strong relationships.
  • Raises expectations of self and others by inspiring confidence, continuously learning, and broadening industry, and technical skills.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and J.D.
  • Admission to the bar of at least one state required, along with the ability to obtain in-house counsel admission if required.
  • Typically, a minimum of eight to ten years of relevant legal experience with a proven track record of positive results.
