Position Description

Food Bank For New York City works to end hunger and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income New Yorkers through a range of programs and services that focus on nutrition, education and financial empowerment. The organization procures and distributes food to approximately 1,000 emergency and community food programs throughout the five boroughs; provides food safety, networking and capacity-building workshops; manages nutrition education programs for schools, after school programs and emergency food programs; operates food stamp outreach and education programs; operates a soup kitchen, food pantry, senior programs; and coordinates the largest Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program in the country; and conducts research and develops policy to inform community and government efforts to end hunger throughout the five boroughs. Location: West Harlem Community Kitchen and Pantry

Location: Lower Manhattan Office - near Wall Street

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive nutrition and food safety services at the Food Bank For New York City. These services will include training, technical assistance and programmatic support for Food Bank staff as well as its membership network of food distribution programs across New York City.  The Nutrition Resource Manager plays a leadership role in relation to all Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) programming.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Food Bank’s nutrition education & food safety services to the over 1,000 emergency feeding programs within its network:
    • Assess the needs of the agencies within the network;
    • Develop educational materials and tools that will increase their knowledge base;
    • Create and facilitate workshops on a monthly basis;
    • Develop marketing & educational materials as well as contribute to Food Bank newsletters & websites;
    • Participate in city & state-wide meetings/working groups related to HPNAP, nutrition and food safety;
    • Provide on-site technical assistance to emergency feeding programs as needed;
    • Implement protocols for relaying urgent news to membership about recalls and other food hazards.
  • Manage Food Bank processes related to nutrition and food safety:
    • Train and advise Food Bank personnel on nutrition and food safety issues;
    • Evaluate food products upon delivery to the warehouse as needed;
    • Researching code dating information with vendors as needed;
    • Participate as a key member of the community kitchen and warehouse inspection teams;
    • Provide clear corrective action plans following inspections;
    • Evaluate inventory offerings and make recommendations for food sourcing;
    • Track nutrition and food safety issues or trends and propose solutions;
    • Facilitate meetings of Food Bank stakeholders relative to nutrition and food safety.
  • Function as an integral member of the Agency Relations team:
  • Troubleshoot issues reported by member agencies and provide excellent customer service;
  • Complete written reports as required;
  • Create and maintain productive working relationships with external stakeholders;
  • Be a resource for important regulations and emerging practices;
  • Supervise interns as appropriate and perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
B.A. or B.S degree & R.D. (Registered Dietitian) Certification required; American Dietary Assoc. Certification preferred;
Min. 3 yrs progressively responsible experience in nutrition, working knowledge of the emergency foodcommunity preferred;
Strong written and oral skills; ability to organize information in a succinct manner;
Experience presenting before large groups and developing training materials;
Knowledge of and skill in using computer software/experience in creating & managing databases (Excel and/or ACCESS);
Comfortable working in various urban settings/Knowledge of city geography;
Able to work well with people of varying cultures and ableto nurture and broker relationships with key agency personnel;
Ability to pay close attention to detail and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
